Women's Golf Signs Azahara Munoz

Nov. 19, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State has signed Azahara Munoz of Mallaga, Spain, third-year Sun Devil women's golf coach Melissa Luellen announced Friday.

She joins Jennifer Osborn of Huntington Beach, Calif., in ASU's recruiting class with both student-athletes expected to join the Sun Devil program in the fall of 2005.

Munoz comes to ASU from Mallaga, Spain, where she was a member of Europe's Junior Solheim Cup Team in 2002 and 2003. She won the 2004 Girls' British Open Amateur Championship in August in Scotland. Munoz also captured the 2002 Spanish Amateur title and was the 2002 Spanish International Junior Champion. She is ranked 10th in the country in the Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings.

'Azahara is a friend of (ASU freshman) Louise Stahle, and she's been a terrific A+ player in Spain,' Luellen said.'She has had a lot of international competitive experience, and winning the Girls' British Open this summer was huge. Azahara may not be the longest hitter, but she has one of the best short games in golf.'
