Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats Arizona State, 174-123

LOS ANGELES - UCLA's women's swimming and diving team hosted the Arizona State Sun Devils for a Pac-10 dual meet on Friday afternoon, winning the dual by a score of 174-123. The Bruins won 11 of the 16 events on the day, including a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 backstroke and all six events between the diving breaks.
UCLA took an early lead with first- and third-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay for 13 team points and built from there. Event winners for the Bruins included Jane Imagane in the 1,000 Free (9:52.12) and 500 Free (4:52.05); Katie Arnold in the 100 Back (56.42), 50 Free (24.09); Kim Vandenberg in the 200 Fly (1:58.56), 100 Free (50.77) and 100 Fly (55.17); Lindsey Smart in the 200 Back (2:04.33); Jeanna Fuccillo in the 200 Breast (2:17.99) and Kim Scarborough in the 400 IM (4:23.33).
The Bruin divers finished second, third and fourth in both the one meter and three meter competitions. Janine Strack finished second in the one-meter competition with a score of 267.66, topping her previous career-best score on that board by more than 19 points. ON the three meter board, Amanda Blong was UCLA's top finisher, scoring 272.93 to finish second behind ASU's Trisha Tumlinson. Tumlinson also won the one-meter competition.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon against Arizona. Diving will begin at Noon at Sunset Recreation Center while swimming will take place at noon at Men's Gym Pool. The swimming and diving meet will be part of a very busy athletic day on UCLA's campus, including the dual meet at noon, a men's basketball game at 1 pm at Pauley Pavilion, an NCAA third round women's soccer match against Duke at 4 pm and a women's volleyball match at Pauley Pavilion at 7 pm.
