Women's Swimming and Diving Falls to UCLA in Pac-10 Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Arizona State University swimming and diving teams were both in action Friday afternoon with the women falling to the UCLA Bruins in their Pac-10 dual opener, 174-123, while the men are trailing USC after the first day of a two-day competition. This marks the first loss for the women on the season as they fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
Senior All-American Trisha Tumlinson led the way for the Sun Devil women in the diving pool claiming first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Tumlinson took the top spot in the 1-meter competition with a 273.52 while she claimed first in the 3-meter event scoring 276.00.
Senior All-American Florencia Szigeti and junior Heidi Schmidt claimed the other ASU individual first place finishes on the afternoon with Szigeti touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.26) while Schmidt claimed top honor in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.00).
The Sun Devil women ended the day strong as they finished with the top two times in the 400 freestyle relay event. The relay team of Szigeti, Caitlin Andrew, Erin Baldinger and Heidi Schmidt swam to a first-place finish (3:27.94) with the foursome of Laura Ullrich, Sally Brown, Sandra Steffensen and Amanda Gillespie finishing a close second.
The Sun Devil men trail the USC Trojans after the first day of a two-day meet. Notable finishes for the men include second-place finishes by senior Jeff Barrett in the 100 freestyle (45.85) and Leo Martins in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.03). CJ Nuess and David Kolozar swam to third and fourth place finishes respectively in the 400 IM event.
The ASU men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action Saturday against USC at the McDonald's Swim Stadium. Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PST.
