Beavers get two wins, still trail Stanford for lead
Nov. 19, 2004
Long Beach, Calif - Oregon State ended the second of three days of competition at the Speedo Cup with two wins and two new school records. The Beavers (2-2 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10) got a win in the first women's event of the night, the 200 Medley Relay and then later when Ausra Pacebutaite broke a school record and won the 100 Backstroke. Overall at the Speedo Cup, the Stanford Cardinal still controls a dominating lead of 458.5 points. The Beavers are in a distant second place with a respectable 697 points.
The Beavers win in the 200 Medley relay was the second fastest time in school history. Also the win is a great stepping stone for the team to qualify their relays for the NCAA championships.
'The relay was outstanding, better than we went last year,' OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. 'One of our goals was to qualify the relays at the NCAA's and this is a step in the right direction.'
Pacebutaite's win in the 100 Backstroke added to the great overall performance by the Beavers at the Speedo Cup where several school records and personal bests are being set. Pacebutaite's time of 55:58 broke the former school record of 56:51.
'She was able to get out to a good lead and finish real strong,' Liebowitz said.
The Beavers got several strong finishes on the evening to continue their overall strong performance at the meet. Courtney Eads finished second in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:49:43 and set school record in the event. This is the second school record Eads has set in the Speedo Cup.
