No. 14 Cal Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Washington, 3-1

BERKELEY, CA - Despite Camille Leffall and Gabrielle Abernathy leading the Golden Bears in kills on senior night, the No. 14-ranked California volleyball team (15-10, 10-6) could not upend No. 1-ranked Washington (23-1, 15-1), losing 3-1 (30-21, 26-30, 30-23, 30-20), Friday night at Haas Pavilion. Leffall and Abernathy, playing their final regular season match at Haas Pavilion, finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Cal also got 12 kills from junior Alicia Powers, and 11 kills, 11 digs and seven block assists from junior Jenna Brown. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter tallied 53 assists and freshman Angie Pressey had a team-high 17 digs.
The Huskies were led by Brie Hagerty's 19 kills, and Christal Morrison and Kaitlin Leck added 16 kills apiece. Washington setter Courtney Thompson had 60 assists and Candace Lee had a match-high 20 digs.
The Bears played catch-up to the Huskies most of the night, but had an impressive comeback in the second game. Trailing 24-18, Cal went on an 8-0 run to take a 26-24 lead. Pressey was instrumental in the Bears streak, tallying four of Cal's eight points on three kills and a solo block. After Hagerty registered a kill, to make the score, 26-25, the Bears finished the game off on kills by Brown and Abernathy, and a service ace by junior Alexis Kollias.
The Bears next travel to No. 22 Arizona and Arizona State to conclude the 2004 regular season. Cal will face the Wildcats, Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at the McKale Center in Tucson, and the Sun Devils, Saturday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. The Bears are looking to advance to NCAA postseason play for the third consecutive year - a feat Cal has not accomplished since the 1987-89 seasons. NCAA volleyball selections will be on Sunday, Nov. 28.
