Stanford Falls to Fullerton in Season-Opening Duals
Nov. 20, 2004
Fullerton, Calif. - Amidst three wrestling mats of action, Stanford could not quite come up with a victory over Cal State Fullerton. In the first dual of the 2004-05 wrestling season, the Titans hung on to defeat the Cardinal by a score of 23-14.
Stanford won four of the matches behind some of the stronger wrestlers on this Cardinal team. In his first official action since winning his national championship, Matt Gentry (157) won a major decision over Angelo Lago 8-0. Fellow senior Nathan Peterson (125) also won his match, a 7-5 decision over Jesse Miramontes.
Redshirt freshman Josh Zupancic (149) continues to wrestle well, winning a narrow 8-7 decision over Jeff Silva. When Gentry won the following match, the team scores were tied 10-10 half way through the dual. Fullerton went on to win the next three matches, however, including Leonel Sanchez's 8-6 come-from-behind win over Imad Kharbush (174). Sanchez is ranked as high as 12th in the nation by some analysts. Ian Bork (197) won a 17-3 major decision against Charlie Walz in the last match, to give Stanford its final points.
Stanford won its dual against Fullerton last year by a score of 20-12. The Cardinal hopes to regroup for tomorrow's California Open, also being held at Fullerton.
Notes: The night also featured an exhibition dual between Embry-Riddle and a Cal State Fullerton B-team, as well as a dual between Santa Ana College (35) and Palomar College (4) ... Attendance was 1,637 ... The Cardinal is back on the mats Sunday at 9.00 am for the California Open.
