No. 4 Stanford Wins 2004 Speedo Cup Despite Not Swimming In Finals Session Saturday

Long Beach, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford won the short-course yards 2004 Speedo Cup despite not competing in the finals session Saturday on the last day of the three-day event being hosted by UC Irvine at the Belmont Plaza Pool. The Cardinal finished with 1211.5 points to defeat defending champion Oregon State's point total of 1122. Stanford freshman Caroline Bruce was named the Swimmer of the Meet, winning the 100 breast and 200 IM. Bruce recorded NCAA 'A' times in all both her individual victories (200 IM, 2:00.44; 100 breast, 1:01.75) on Thursday and Friday, respectively. She also recorded an NCAA 'A' time of 2:14.21 as the top qualifier in the prelims of the 200 breast on Saturday but did not swim in the finals of the event.
