California Defeats Southern, 82-63

Nov. 23, 2004

Berkeley, Calif. (AP) - Richard Midgley scored a career-high 26 points as California beat Southern 82-63 on Tuesday in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Marquise Kately added 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for California (2-1).

The Bears won despite losing starting point guard Ayinde Ubaka to a foot injury in the first half. Ubaka, who has started 26 of 28 games as a freshman last season, had five points and six assists before getting hurt. He spent the entire second half on crutches and was scheduled to be x-rayed.

Peter Cipriano scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Southern (1-2).

Trayvean Scott added 12 points for the Jaguars, who were without their top player. Deon Saunders, the Southwestern Athletic Conference's preseason Player of the Year, underwent minor knee surgery in September and isn't expected to return to the lineup for at least another two weeks.

Midgley sank his first six 3-point attempts of the game, five coming in the first half including a buzzer-beater just before halftime that gave the Bears a 40-27 lead.

Southern scored the first two points of the game but missed nine of its next 10 shots and never recovered. The Jaguars, who averaged 75 points in their first two games, shot just 37 percent from the floor in the first half, 41.8 percent overall.
