Cougars Defeat St. Mary's 70-58 At Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic

MORAGA, Calif. - The sophomore duo of Kate Benz and Adriane Ferguson combined to score 34 points to lead the Washington State women's basketball team to a 70-58 win over the St. Mary's Gaels at the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic Friday at McKeon Pavilion.
Coming off her career-high 26 point, six 3-point field goal effort at Nebraska, Nov. 22, Ferguson scored 18 points against St. Mary's while Benz tallied 16 points. The duo also combined for 15 rebounds (Ferguson 8, Benz 7).
Once again, Ferguson amassed her point total mainly from behind the arc as the Spokane, Wash. native was 4-of-8 from 3-point territory. In the last two games, Ferguson has made good on 10-of-16 attempts (62.5 percent) from beyond the arc.
WSU faces Tennessee-Chattanooga in the tournament's championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. UTC defeated Northwestern State 83-59 in Friday's first game.
With the game deadlocked at 28 at the half, the teams traded runs to open the second half.
The Cougars began the second 20 minutes with a bucket from Benz and a Ferguson 3-pointer to take a 33-28 lead.
St. Mary's responded with six straight points of its own to retake the lead at 34-33 with 16:44 remaining.
That was the final lead St. Mary's would enjoy; however, as WSU put the game away with a 12-0 run to open a 45-34 lead with 14:40 left. The run was sparked by five points from Ferguson
The Cougars extended their lead to as much as 16 at 53-37 with 10:21 left. The Gaels pulled to within eight on two occasions but that as was close as they would get.
After a 7-of-23 shooting performance in the first half, the Cougars shot 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) from the field in the second half.
