Murphy Has 16 Kills in Volleyball Sweep at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Brynn Murphy had 16 kills and four blocks while Krystal McFarland and Rachell Johnson added six blocks apiece as 16th-ranked UCLA swept Washington State on Friday night in Bohler Gym, 30-27, 30-22, 30-27. UCLA improves to 18-9, 11-6 Pac-10. WSU falls to 4-26, 1-16 Pac-10.
Washington State led game one 20-19 before the Bruins scored five-straight points, including an ace by McFarland, to take a 24-20 lead. WSU closed to within one point at 28-27, but a Murphy kill and an attack error by WSU's Kristin Kelley gave UCLA the 30-27 game one win.
Game two was all Bruins as UCLA scored the first three points, including back-to-back kills from Murphy. The UCLA lead was just 12-10 before the Bruins went on a tear, scoring eight of the next 10 points, including five WSU errors, to give UCLA a 20-12 edge. The lead reached as much as nine points at 27-19 before the Bruins ended game two with a Johnson kill for a 30-22 decision.
Washington State came out on fire in game three as the host Cougars took a 16-9 lead at the midway point. The Bruins responded with a 7-2 run to trim the margin to 18-16. However, UCLA still trailed late, 23-20, before the Bruins went on another 7-2 run, finally taking the lead for the first time in game three at 24-23 on a Nana Meriwether kill. A kill by Brittany Ringel would complete the comeback as UCLA took game three, 30-27, to earn the sweep.
Murphy's 16 kills paced all players, coming on 28 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. Becky Green also added 10 kills and seven digs while Chrissie Zartman notched a match-high 16 digs in the win. WSU was paced by Jennifer Todd with 10 kills.
UCLA wraps up the regular season on Saturday night as the Bruins head to Seattle to face third-ranked Washington. The field for the 2004 NCAA Tournament will be announced live on Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:45 p.m. PST on ESPNews.
