UCLA Gymnastics Team Ranked Pre-Season No. 1

Dec. 1, 2004

Two-time defending NCAA Women's Gymnastics Champion UCLA was voted pre-season No. 1 for the fifth consecutive year in a pre-season vote by coaches. The Bruins received 15 of 26 first-place votes.

Head coach Valorie Kondos Field returns two All-Americans from last year's NCAA and Regional championship squad - 2003 NCAA bars and beam champion Kate Richardson and 2004 Pac-10 beam co-champion Kristen Maloney. Richardson and Maloney are two of three Bruin Olympians; Richardson led Canada's Olympic teams in 2000 and 2004, and two-time U.S. national all-around champion Maloney was a leader of the 2000 U.S. team. The third Olympian joins the squad this season as a freshman - 2000 U.S. Olympian Tasha Schwikert.

UCLA will face 12 of the Top 25 teams in the polls this season, including three of the Top 5 and seven of the Top 10. The Bruins open the season at No. 5 Utah on Jan. 7 and host No. 10 Nebraska in the home opener on Monday, Jan. 17 at 2 pm. The Bruins will be conducting a formal autograph session at the conclusion of the Nebraska meet.

Other Top 25 teams on the home schedule are No. 25 California on Jan. 23, No. 21 Washington on Feb. 13, No. 13 Arizona and No. 2 Georgia on Feb. 27, and No. 6 Florida on Mar. 6.
