Mellouli, Jensen Highlight USC Efforts At Texas Invite
Dec. 2, 2004
Sophomore Larsen Jensen (4:15.43) and junior Ous Mellouli (4:15.43) stretched their distance muscles in precise time, tying for second in the 500y free in NCAA automatic qualifying swims, barely out of first, to highlight USC's efforts on the first day of the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, on Thursday (Dec. 2).
Jesen and Mellouli, both 2004 Olympians, both were just off of another Olympian, Peter Vanderkaay, who won in 4:15.32. Mellouli actually led for much of the race, but Vanderkaay inched ahead for the win just as Jensen caught up to his teammate.
USC sprinter Sean Sussex turned in an excellent swim in the 50y free, taking third in 20.15, an NCAA consideration time, while first-year Australian transfer Richard Gosper was eighth (20.63, 20.39 in prelims).
In the team scoring, USC is third on the men's side, fifth for the women.
