Beavers Earn 100th Civil War Win
Dec. 10, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State earned its 100th win over Oregon in dual meet wrestling by beating the Ducks 22-13 Friday night in Gill Coliseum. A crowd of 1,214 saw the Beavers get three straight wins from 125-pounder Eric Stevenson, 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs and 141-pounder Clint Leonard to wrap up the Pacific-10 victory.
OSU (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) now owns a 100-24-4 advantage in the Civil War series, which dates back to 1915.
'That's a nice round number - 100,' said Oregon State head coach Joe Wells, whose team now gets right back on the mat to wrestle No. 4 Nebraska on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. 'We had some opportunities and some young guys stepped up tonight.'
Both teams were missing a number of starters due to injury or illness. OSU was without 157-pounder Tony Hook, nationally-ranked 165-pounder Matt Ellis, 174-pounder Jeremy Larson and nationally-ranked heavyweight Ty Watterson. Oregon (0-3, 0-2) was missing nationally-ranked 157-pounder Joey Bracamonte, nationally-ranked 165-pounder Luke Larwin, 141-pounder Skyler Woods and 149-pounder Stewart Bogart.
The Beavers took six victories, getting team bonus points for major decisions from 165-pounder Anthony Weber, 184-pounder Dan Pitsch, 197-pounder Travis Gardner and Leonard. Still, OSU led just 12-10 after six matches until Stevenson, Pfennigs and Leonard strung together their victories.
Perhaps the key win came from Pfennigs, as the sophomore took an 8-7 win over Martin Mitchell, who is ranked 19th in the nation by InterMat. Pfennigs fell into a 4-0 disadvantage early in the second period before rallying.
'I started out pretty slow; it didn't feel like my legs were moving too well,' Pfennigs said. 'Then it just felt good as the match went on, and I was able to create some breaks and find some scrambles and get on top.'
Pfennigs got within 4-3 on a takedown early in the third period, then tied the match at 5-5 with another takedown with 53 seconds left in the match. From there, he took Mitchell to his back and nearly got the pin several times before settling for a three-point near-fall that made it 8-5; Mitchell closed the gap with an escape in the closing seconds and a point for riding time.
'A few times I thought I was pretty close (to the pin), but you try not to think about it after it's over with,' Pfennigs said. 'I tried to keep pushing him, I knew he was getting tired, so it went pretty well there at the end.'
Leonard followed that up with an 8-0 major decision over Elliott Tracy that put the dual out of reach at 22-10. Stevenson had started the string with a 7-6 decision over Joey Lucas, who had eliminated Stevenson from the Pac-10 Championships with a 5-3 decision last season.
'Eric came through and got three takedowns on the guy, Bobby came from behind and persevered and stayed with it and prevailed and put him on his back,' Wells said.
Gardner got his major decision after Oregon made a lineup switch, moving Scott Barker - ranked fifth by Amateur Wrestling News and ninth by IM at 197 pounds - up to heavyweight and sending Tony Rolen out at 197 pounds. After falling behind 3-2 in the first period, the OSU freshman reeled off 12 unanswered points for the 14-3 victory.
'Travis stepped up; they pulled a little switch on him and he just stayed solid and beat the guy,' Wells said. The Ducks did get the win from Barker at heavyweight, though, as a late takedown gave him a 3-1 decision over Jamie Rakevich, who has been ranked as high as 10th nationally this season by AWN.
Weber got OSU going at 165 pounds, taking a 14-4 major decision over Scott Woods to give the Beavers a 4-3 lead. Oregon went back in front 6-4 when Shane Webster, ranked fourth nationally by AWN and third by IM, earned a 16-7 major decision over Steve Grayson.
At 184 pounds, Dan Pitsch returned the lead to OSU for good at 8-6. Ranked 20th by AWN and 18th by IM, Pitsch scored a 13-2 major decision over Chet McBee. Pitsch is now 8-3 this season with five major decisions.
