Dec. 11, 2004
SAN DIEGO - Washington State's Charmaine Jones scored 11 points to lead a balanced Cougar offensive effort as WSU outlasted San Diego State 55-50 in women's basketball action, Saturday at Peterson Gym.
The win improved WSU to 4-3 while SDSU dropped to 2-3.
'An ugly win is better than a pretty loss,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. 'It was an ugly win but it was a win on a road.
'The team was tired but they stepped up,' Murrell added. 'I am so proud of them. It says a lot about this team. They are dead tired but they pulled it out and they won.'
Jones led a trio of Cougars who scored in double figures. Emma Joneby and Adriane Ferguson each added 10 points. Joneby also added nine rebounds as did Kate Benz, who scored eight points as well. SDSU was led by Ashley Cheeseman, who tallied a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Down 26-23 at the half, WSU outscored SDSU 32-24 in the second half including 8-3 in the final 4:26. The game was tight throughout with 13 lead changes and eight ties. The largest lead of the contest was eight by SDSU at 26-18 with 1:25 remaining in the first half.
The Aztecs eight-point advantage was the end result of a 12-0 run that turned a four-point SDSU deficit into the eight-point lead.
However, WSU rallied as freshman Jordan McCormick sparked WSU with five consecutive points to close the half. McCormick, who finished with seven points, hit two free throws and a 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining to shave the Cougars' deficit to three at the half.
The Cougars continued their run at the beginning of the second half, outscoring SDSU 7-2 in the opening 2:41 of the half. The run was culminated by a 3-pointer from Ferguson.
A Cheesman lay-up brought the Aztecs to a 30-30 tie with 17:19 remaining. Over the next 14:09, there would be six ties and neither team would have more than a three-point advantage (WSU at 40-37 with 10:01 remaining).
With the game deadlocked at 47 with 3:10 left a Benz bucket gave the Cougars a two-point advantage. After a miss by SDSU's Lindsey Casey, a Jessica Perry jumper extended WSU's lead to four at 51-47 with 2:26 remaining.
After closing the gap to two at 51-49, the Aztecs had an opportunity to tie as Casey went to the line for two shots with 1:44 remaining. Casey missed her first attempt and made good on the second to close to the gap to a single point.
That would be the final point SDSU scored, however, as Ferguson converted off of a Benz miss to give WSU a 53-50 lead with 1:08 remaining. Jones hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to cap the scoring. During the Cougars' final run, SDSU missed four straight field goal attempts.
WSU begins a four-game homestand, Saturday, Dec. 18 against Eastern Washington. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Friel Court.
