Boyer, Thompson Ending Football Careers
Dec. 13, 2004
Thompson's participation was limited to just 16 games in his four seasons with the program due to reoccurring shoulder injuries and a high ankle sprain in 2001. The National City, Calif., native rushed for 420 yards and four touchdowns and was a member of three bowl teams.
'Allen Thompson has elected not to use his fifth-year of eligibility. He has had two shoulder surgeries and felt some slippage at the end of the season,' WSU Head Coach Bill Doba said. 'I thoroughly understand his decision and we will miss him. He is going to graduate in May and we are going to do everything we can to help him continue his education.'
Boyer began his career as a defensive end and made the switch to offense prior to the 2004 campaign. The Lapwai, Idaho, native played in nine games during his career. Like Thompson, Boyer was a member of the Cougars' 2001 Sun Bowl team, 2003 Rose Bowl team, and 2003 Holiday Bowl squad.
'Both of these young men were very mature in their decisions,' Doba said. 'They could have come out in the spring and may have been part-time players with their injuries, but they decided to retire and free up a scholarship at a time when we can go out and find somebody to fill it.'
Both student-athletes were honored as members of the 2004 senior class Saturday night at WSU's annual season-ending banquet.
