Due to semester exams, a light schedule of games this week for the Pac-10 Conference... STANFORD returns to campus for its first home game of the season in the newly-renovated Maples Pavilion against UC Davis on Saturday... At 7-1, the ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils are off to their best start since 1990-91, while the WASHINGTON Huskies are off to their best start since the 1996-97 season.

U.S. BANK PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK


Farmar, a freshman from Van Nuys, Calif., scored a season-best 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point range and 7-of-7 from the free throw line, as UCLA defeated Pepperdine 85-83.

Farmar scored nine of UCLA's final 11 points. With UCLA trailing 78-74, Farmar's two free throws (2:07) brought the Bruins within two points (78-76). With UCLA trailing by five points (81-76), Farmar's three-pointer with 1:30 left to play made it 81-79. With nine seconds left, Farmar's two free throws tied the score at 83. With four seconds remaining in the game, his drive through the lane and five-foot straight-away bank shot gave UCLA the 85-83 victory.

Farmar's 25 points were the most scored by a UCLA freshman since Jason Kapono scored 27 points twice during the 1999-2000 season.

It's the first weekly honor for Farmar, UCLA's 40th honor all-time.

The following 13 freshmen have found themselves in the starting lineup at some point this season (season averages): California C DeVon Hardin (5.8 ppg/5.9 rpg); Oregon F Malik Hairston (12.8 ppg/4.8 rpg/3.8 apg) and G Bryce Taylor (13.0 ppg/3.4 rpg); Oregon State F Sasa Cuic (16.4 ppg/5.4 rpg) and F Marcel Jones (7.4 ppg/3.9 rpg); UCLA F Josh Shipp (7.2 ppg/4.8 rpg), G Arron Afflalo (12.5 ppg/3.0 rpg), and G Jordan Farmar (14.0 ppg/4.8 apg); USC G Gabriel Pruitt (11.2 ppg/4.0 apg); Washington State F Robbie Cowgill (5.9 ppg/3.4 rpg), C Chris Henry (2.0 ppg), G Derrick Low (0.0 ppg/0.5 rpg), G Kyle Weaver (4.0 ppg/3.2 rpg/2.5 apg).

With the win over Utah, ARIZONA coach Lute Olson picked up career victory 1,000 as a head coach at all levels. In 47 seasons, Olson has a record of 1,000-349 (.741), including 11 yars as a high school coach, four on the junior college level and 32 on the NCAA Division I level. Of the 15 other coaches to reach 1,000 career victories, nine won a majority of games on the professional level and six did so in high school... Senior G Salim Stoudamire was held scoreless in the win over Utah. It was third time in 101 career games played that Stoudamire was held scoreless. He followed his last scoreless outing (Dec. 30, 2003 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette) with a 26-point performance on 10-of-14 shooting (6-of-9 3FG) vs. Arizona State (Jan. 3, 2004)... Arizona has scored fewer than 70 points five times this season. In the previous three seasons (96 games), Arizona scored fewer than 70 points seven times.

ARIZONA STATE is 7-1 for the first time since the 1990-91 team went 9-1... With his 19-point, nine rebound performance against UC Riverside, junior F Ike Diogu just missed a double-double, the 12th time in 67 games he has posted nine rebounds... Diogu is now 82-of-91 (.901) from the free throw line on the year. He has made 505 career free throws - just the tenth Pac-10 player to make 500 free throws... Sophomore newcomer Bryson Krueger had 23 points vs. UC Riverside on Sunday, including five three-pointers. He is averaging 18.5 points in his past two games...ASU is 19-0 in the past four seasons when it shoots 50 percent from the field... Diogu has been fouled when making a shot 66 times in his career and has made the ensuing free throw 48 times.


CALIFORNIA junior F Rod Benson recorded the first double-double of his career with a career-best 25 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Colorado... Benson is averaging 18.0 ppg over the last four games. On the year, Benson has scored 102 points in eight games (12.8 ppg). In the two seasons prior this year, he scored a total of 68 points in 37 games (1.8 ppg)... Junior G Richard Midgely became the 10th player in Cal history to record 100 three-pointers... Coach Ben Braun is 10 wins shy of reaching 500 for his career as a college coach.

Freshman G Bryce Taylor led OREGON with a season-high 19 points in the loss to No. 1 Illinois. He's scored in double figures in four of Oregon's five games this season... In five games this season, four different players have held or shared team-high scoring honors... Newcomers account for 49 percent of the Oregon's offense (37.9 ppg), 47 percent of its rebounds (16.5 rpg) and 46 percent of its assists (7.8 apg)... The Ducks are riding a 28-game homecourt winning streak against non-conference opponents.

OREGON STATE freshman F Marcel Jones scored a season-best 14 points in the overtime loss against Georgia... Junior G Lamar Hurd missed his second consecutive game with back problems... Junior F Nick DeWitz, a transfer from Iowa, made his debut for the Beavers, scoring four points and collecting three rebounds against Georgia... The Beavers look to open the season 3-0 at home for the first time in three seasons under coach Jay John.

STANFORD ends its season-opening seven game road trip at Denver on Monday night before returning to a remodeled Maples Pavilion for Saturday's game against UC Davis... The Cardinal's trip to Denver is its first since the 1972-73 season, and its first to Colorado since the 1990-91 season... Sophomores Mark Bradford and Evan Moore joined the Cardinal men's basketball squad November 30 after they finished out the football season as Stanford's second and third leading pass catchers in 2004... The two are part of a prominent list of Cardinal football-basketball athletes that includes Justin Armour (1992-93 season), Chris Burford (1957-60), Teyo Johnson (2000-02), John Paye (1983-86), and David Shaw (1993-94).

UCLA freshman G Jordan Farmar made a big impact in the Bruins' win over Pepperdine, scoring a career-high 25 points and nine of UCLA's last 11 in the 85-83 squeaker... Three freshman started for the Bruins against the Waves, as G Aaron Afflalo and F Josh Shipp joined Farmar in the starting lineup. It was the first time that a trio of frosh made the starting lineup for UCLA since JaRon Rush, Jerome Moiso and Dan Gadzuric started during 1998-99 season. Shipp replaced senior F Dijon Thompson, who missed the game, having re-opened a gash in his hand during the Bruins' loss to Boston College last week.

With a 87-75 win over San Diego, USC interim head coach Jim Saia became the first Trojan head man to win his first non-home game since Stan Morrison did it in 1980. The game was played on a neutral floor at San Diego State's Cox Arena... Sophomore G Lodrick Stewart scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting in the victory. He leads the team and is 12th in the Pac-10 in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game... Freshman G Gabriel Pruitt started the game for the Trojans, scored 12 points and collected a pair of steals. He is currently second in the Conference, averaging 2.33 steals per game on the season.

WASHINGTON won the race to 100, becoming the first Pac-10 team this season to reach triple digits with a 100-93 shootout win over Loyola Marymount... The Huskies lead the Pac-10 in scoring, averaging 89.5 points per contest, more than 12 points per game better than Oregon, the second-most prolific scoring team... Senior G Tre Simmons scored a career-high 26 points against the Lions, including a pair of three-pointers that broke the game open in the second half. Simmons finished 4-6 from downtown and 10-17 overall... It was the second straight game in which Simmons set his career high - he also did it in Washington's 98-69 win over San Diego State with a 23 point effort... Senior G Will Conroy dished out a career-high 13 assists against Loyola Marymount - he is the Pac-10 leader, averaging 6.71 assists per game... Junior G Nate Robinson has scored 20 or more points six times this season. He posted five 20-point games all of last season.

WASHINGTON STATE's reputation for defensive intensity proved to be well deserved in the Cougars' 54-52 loss to No. 25 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs had averaged 83.8 points per game prior to facing Washington State, and the Cougars led at half 27-25... Washington State followed up its near miss with a gritty 49-46 road win against BYU at Salt Lake City's Delta Center. The Cougars from Washington held the Cougars from Utah to 35.4 percent shooting from the field and 24.0 percent from beyond the arc in their victory... Cougar opponents are averaging 51.9 points on 37.7 percent shooting for the year.
