SUNDAY, DECEMBER 19Oregon State at No. 14 Central Michigan; Mount Pleasant, Mich.; 10 a.m.Oregon State at Eastern Michigan; Ypsilanti, Mich.; 4 p.m.

Finals week is over, but Oregon State has two more wrestling tests before its holiday break. The Beavers (1-1 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10) will have a busy Sunday as they go on the road to meet No. 14 Central Michigan (1-0) in the afternoon, then make the drive to wrestle Eastern Michigan (2-2) in the evening.

'It'll be an interesting trip for the guys to go up into Michigan. It'll probably be snowing,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said.

That aspect of the trip may get Oregon State in the mood for a white Christmas, but the jaunt is part of OSU's plan to sustain its performance level through the holidays and into the New Year. When it's over, the Beavers can re-evaluate what's worked in the first half of the season and get ready for the second half.

Getting healthy will be one big step. Nationally-ranked 165-pounder Matt Ellis and starting 174-pounder Jeremy Larson have begun working out but are unlikely to wrestle Sunday. They could be back in the lineup for the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals on Jan. 7.

Oregon State's three wrestlers in the national rankings pretty much held their positions on the Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat lists this week. Ellis remained ranked 13th by AWN and 14th by IM; at 184, Dan Pitsch remained 20th on the AWN list and moved up one spot to 17th in the IM rankings; and heavyweight Ty Watterson is again 15th on the AWN list and 11th in the IM rankings.

From all the Beavers, Wells is looking for matches that are wrestled with a sense of purpose.

'I'd like to see a logical game plan and a predictable game plan from each of the guys as they wrestle - that I know what they're doing and they're following through with what they're attempting to do and seeing the match through and figuring it out and sticking to their game plan,' Wells said. 'That's what I'd really like to see.

'Once we have that down and know exactly what we want to do and what we hope to do, then it's a reality - you either do it or you don't. You can figure out why you're not living up to your plan.'

Central Michigan opened its dual meet season with a 25-10 win at Michigan State last week. The Chippewas have eight wrestlers in the national rankings, as 125-pounder Luke Smith is ranked 13th by AWN and 17th by IM; 133-pounder Jason Borrelli is ranked 20th by AWN and 19th by IM; 149-pounder Mark Disalvo is ranked 10th by AWN and 14th by IM; 157-pounder Adam Cunningham is ranked 19th by IM; 165-pounder David Bolyard is ranked second by both AWN and IM; 174-pounder Mitch Hancock is ranked eighth by AWN and seventh by IM; 197-pounder Alex Lammers is ranked 18th by AWN and 20th by IM; and heavyweight Bill Stouffer is ranked ninth by AWN and eighth by IM.

'They're a good team,' Wells said of CMU. 'They're well-balanced. They're solid, they have a solid schedule. They've had All-Americans these last couple years. They've got the No. 2-ranked kid at 165 pounds (Bolyard).'

Eastern Michigan won two of three duals last week at the Slippery Rock Quadrangular, losing to Mercyhurst 25-10 and then beating George Mason 24-19 and Slippery Rock 24-12. The Eagles have no wrestlers in this week's national rankings.

'They're improving, they're getting better,' Wells said. 'Over the last couple years, they've made a concerted effort to do a better job of recruiting. They've got a stable group of guys, and they'll be okay.'

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State has an all-time record of 0-1 against Central Michigan in dual meets. The only previous meeting came in 2003 in Corvallis, when the Chippewas took a 19-12 victory.

This will be the first-ever dual meet between OSU and Eastern Michigan.

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEETS: Oregon State began its dual meet season the weekend of Dec. 10-11 at Gill Coliseum, beating Oregon 22-13 and losing to No. 4 Nebraska 36-3.

On Dec. 10, Oregon State earned its 100th win over Oregon in dual meets by beating the Ducks 22-13. A crowd of 1,214 saw the Beavers get 3 straight wins from 125-pounder Eric Stevenson, 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs and 141-pounder Clint Leonard to wrap up the Pac-10 victory. OSU now owns a 100-24-4 advantage in the Civil War series, which dates back to 1915. 'That's a nice round number - 100,' Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said. 'We had some opportunities and some young guys stepped up tonight.' Both teams were missing a number of starters due to injury or illness. OSU was without 157-pounder Tony Hook, nationally-ranked 165-pounder Matt Ellis, 174-pounder Jeremy Larson and nationally-ranked heavyweight Ty Watterson. Oregon was missing nationally-ranked 157-pounder Joey Bracamonte, nationally-ranked 165-pounder Luke Larwin, 141-pounder Skyler Woods and 149-pounder Stewart Bogart. The Beavers took 6 victories, getting team bonus points for major decisions from 165-pounder Anthony Weber, 184-pounder Dan Pitsch, 197-pounder Travis Gardner and Leonard. Still, OSU led just 12-10 after six matches until Stevenson, Pfennigs and Leonard strung together their victories. Perhaps the key win came from Pfennigs, as the sophomore took an 8-7 win over Martin Mitchell, who is ranked 19th in the nation by InterMat. Pfennigs fell into a 4-0 disadvantage early in the second period before rallying.

On Dec. 11, heavyweight Ty Watterson returned to the Oregon State lineup with a victory but the Beavers lost to No. 4 Nebraska 36-3. Watterson took an 8-3 decision over the Cornhuskers' Jon May. Nebraska, with 8 nationally ranked wrestlers in its lineup, earned team bonus points for 4 major decisions, 1 technical fall and 1 pin en route to the victory. 'They're big and they're strong and they drove right straight through us,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the Cornhuskers. 'They're a good team, well-disciplined, and they kept the pressure on us. We made it easy on them in a couple of situations. In several matches we were in the match and had opportunities to win the matches, and we got tired in the process and made some poor decisions at the tail end of the match.' At 133 pounds, Bobby Pfennigs took Nebraska's Dominick Moyer into overtime before losing 4-2. Pfennigs was close to the winning takedown in the extra session but couldn't complete it and Moyer slipped in for the win. At 141, Beaver freshman Clint Leonard was within 1 point in the third period of Matt Murray, who is ranked third by Amateur Wrestling News and seventh by InterMat. Murray managed a takedown midway through the period and added a point for riding time for a 7-3 decision. The afternoon featured what could be 4 of the top heavyweights in the country. In a pre-dual exhibition, Nebraska's Mitch Manstedt - ranked 18th by AWN and nursing an ankle injury - decisioned OSU's Jamie Rakevich, 3-1; Rakevich has been ranked as high as 10th nationally this year.Watterson, ranked 15th by AWN and 11th by IM, then took his 8-3 decision over May, who slipped to 13-6 this season.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells: Joe Wells, who is in his 13th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 137-85-1 for a winning percentage of .617.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 22 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE THIRD IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were third in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the 2004-05 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 871-277-24 and a .753 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 49th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 362-71-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .832. This season, OSU is 1-1 at home.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING HOMECOMING: Oregon State will celebrate its annual OSU Wrestling Homecoming later this season at a meet to be announced.. In last season's OSU Wrestling Homecoming, Oregon State beat Oregon 23-18 in front of 1,132 fans and legendary former OSU coach Dale Thomas. There were 25 former OSU wrestlers on hand; during their Oregon State careers, they accounted for 35 individual conference championships, 25 All-America finishes and 7 national championships.
