Diamond Dawgs Ranked No. 17 In Preseason

Dec. 22, 2004

The Washington baseball team was ranked No. 17 in the Collegiate Baseball 'Fabulous 40' pre-season poll, released today. Additionally, the newspaper named UW sophomore pitcher Tim Lincecum a first-team preseason All-American and selected junior shortstop Brent Lillibridge for the third team.

Washington, which opens its season Feb. 11 at UC Irvine, finished 39-20-1 overall last season, going 15-9 to finish second in the Pac-10 Conference. The team returns starters at six of nine spots in the batting order as well as all seven pitchers that started a game last year.

Washington was the fourth-highest ranked Pac-10 team in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Stanford was ranked No. 6 while Arizona and Arizona State were placed at No. 11 and 12, respectively. Texas was named the preseason No. 1 team.

Lincecum, from Liberty High in Renton, was already named a preseason All-America first-teamer by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and was the 2004 Pac-10 Pitcher and Freshman of the Year after striking out a school-record 161 hitters as a freshman. He went 10-3 with a 3.53 earned run average last spring.

Lillibridge, from Everett (Jackson High), has twice been named to the All-Pac-10 first team in his two seasons at the UW. He enters his junior season with a .347 career batting average and 24 career home runs, 10th in Husky history.
