Beavers Eliminated At Midlands Open
Dec. 29, 2004
EVANSTON, Ill. - Oregon State 133-pounders Tim Norman and Bobby Pfennigs were eliminated Wednesday on the first day of the Midlands Open wrestling tournament. Only three Beavers went to the tourney and their only other entrant, heavyweight Jamie Rakevich, was ill and unable to wrestle.
'He wasn't ready to go, and this isn't a tournament where you want to be wrestling if you're not ready,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the prestigious event. 'This was an opportunity for Tim and Bobby - they both wanted to come to this tournament and have a chance for more matches. They had some good opportunities; I just wish we had wrestled a little more competitively and a little tougher. We let some things slip away.'
Pfennigs, a sophomore, won his first-round match with a 10-1 major decision over ninth-seeded Tim Harner of Rider. He was then beaten by eighth-seeded Matt Ciasulli of Lehigh 5-2 in the second round and eliminated by Pat Castillo of Northern Illinois 3-1 in the wrestleback second round.
Norman, a senior, was beaten by Brian Dyer of Indiana 5-2 in the first round and then was knocked out of the tournament by Castillo 8-2 in the wrestleback first round.
