Gymnasts Ranked No. 9 In GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll

Arizona State University's women's gymnastics team is ranked 9th in the GymInfo preseason coaches poll announced Monday.

ASU received 387 votes to gain its No. 9 ranking. UCLA is ranked No. 1 with 608 points and 15 first-place votes. Stanford is No. 3 (554, 4) while Oregon State is 12th (280). Arizona (No. 13, 264), Washington (No. 21, 117) and California (No. 25, 86) round out the Pacific-10 Conference teams in the top 25.

The Sun Devils, under 25th-year head coach John Spini, begin the 2005 campaign this Friday, January 7 at the Maui Invitational against Maryland, Boise State and Alaska-Anchorage. Spini has 299 career victories and will be looking for career win No. 300 at the Maui event.

ASU is led by junior all-arounder Ashley Kelly, who won the 2004 national championship on the balance beam. Senior Kari Muth and junior Lauren Powell are the other team leaders.

ASU's first home meet is Friday, January 14 versus Washington at 7:30 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.

The Devils host No. 1 UCLA on Friday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. ASU also hosts No. 25 California on February 11 at 7:30 p.m. and No. 19 Penn State on March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
