Beavers Place Two On Preseason All-America Team
Jan. 6, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State sophomore pitcher Dallas Buck and junior outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury have been named to Baseball America magazine's preseason All-America team. Buck (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS) was named to the second team and Ellsbury (Madras, Ore./Madras HS) was named to the third team.
Baseball America asked major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and major league potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, nine members of the 2004 preseason team were first-round picks last June.
Buck, a righthander, had a 3-6 record with six saves and a 5.06 earned run average last spring for Oregon State; in 69 innings, he walked 30 and struck out 57. He earned first team Summer All-America honors in 2004 after pitching for the Falmouth Commodores in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Buck had a 4-1 record with a 0.77 earned run average while pitching in 10 games for Falmouth; in 58 innings, he allowed just 26 hits while walking 20 and striking out 65.
Ellsbury batted .352 with three home runs, two triples, eight doubles, 20 runs batted in and 20 stolen bases for Oregon State last season. Last summer, he was named the 17th-best pro prospect in the Cape Code League. Also playing for Falmouth, Ellsbury batted .245 with one home run, three triples, two doubles, seven runs batted in and was 12-for-15 on stolen base attempts.
OSU begins its 2005 season Feb. 3-6 at the Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament hosted by Arizona State. The Beavers open their 25-game home schedule March 4-6 with a non-league series against California-Riverside.
