Buck And Larish Named Baseball America Preseason All-Americans

Jan. 6, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- A day after Arizona State earned a preseason No. 9 ranking from Baseball America, junior outfielder Travis Buck and senior infielder Jeff Larish were both named to the publications annual preseason All-America team. Buck was a first-team selection and Larish was named a third-team preseason All-American.

Buck and Larish were among nine Pac-10 selections to the preseason All-America team, leading all conferences. USC had catcher Jeff Clement (1st) and pitcher Ian Kennedy (3rd), Stanford was represented by second baseman Jed Lowrie (1st) and first baseman John Mayberry (2nd), Oregon State had two selections in outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury (3rd) and pitcher Dallas Buck (2nd) and Arizona outfielder Trevor Crowe was a second-team selection.

With his first-team selection, Buck (Richland, Wash.) adds his fourth preseason honor heading into his junior season. Ranked as the No. 18 overall prospect for the 2005 MLB Draft, Buck also earned second-team honors from the NCBWA and third-team honors from Collegiate Baseball. Buck was also one of 58 players named to the initial watch list for the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year award. The outfielder is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign in which he hit .373 (84-for-225) with 16 doubles, nine home runs, 58 RBI and 13 stolen bases. The career .349 hitter followed that with a standout summer in helping the USA Baseball National Team to a gold medal in the World University Games. After hitting .412 (28-for-68) with Team USA, Buck was named a first-team Summer All-American by Baseball America.

Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) was the lone senior on the All-American team and was one of eight players that made the team for the second straight year. He is coming off a junior season in which he hit .308 (73-for-237) with seven home runs and 49 RBI. Projected as a first-round pick last year, Larish slipped to the 13th round (Los Angeles Dodgers) and reportedly turned down a six-figure signing bonus to return for his final season with the Sun Devils. After playing in the outfield last season, Larish will move back to the infield to start at first or third base. The career .337 hitter (202-for-599) is looking to return to the form of his sophomore season in which he hit .372 (87-for-234) with 18 doubles, 18 home runs, 78 walks and 95 RBI. Larish was also a third-team preseason All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball.

The No. 9/11 Sun Devils open the 2005 season Jan. 28-30 against nationally ranked Long Beach State. The annual alumni game is schedule for Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium. ASU's schedule includes 21 games against eight teams ranked in Baseball America's preseason top 25 and 24 games against teams listed in Collegiate Baseball's preseason top 40.
