Cardinal Wins Two of Three at Lonestar Duals

Jan. 9, 2005

Grand Prairie, Tex - 22 college teams; 14 hours of wrestling; 3 mats of action. This year's Lonestar Duals featured all four of the military academies as well as powerhouses such as Oklahoma, Michigan, Cornell, and Harvard. Stanford won two of its three duals on the day, defeating Air Force 27-16 and Harvard 25-10 while falling to Michigan 32-10.

In session two of the duals, the Cardinal took on the Air Force Falcons. Pins by freshman Josh Zupancic (149) and Shawn Ritzenthaler (285) gave Stanford momentum in the match. Five other Cardinal wrestlers recorded decisions to give Stanford it's 27-16 victory.

The dual between the Stanford Cardinal and the Harvard Crimson proved to be a colorful one. Harvard took a 6-3 lead, but Stanford won six straight matches to take a commanding lead. The Cardinal recorded four major decisions during that streak and won the dual by a final score of 25-10.

In the final session of the night, Michigan soundly defeated Stanford 32-10. Ray Blake (157) was the only Cardinal to record a decision. The team's only other points came from a forfeit at the 125 pound weight class.

Notes: Matt Gentry, the defending national champion at 157 pounds, did not compete in the duals ... Stanford's next competition is at the Menlo College Invitational, held in Menlo Park, on January 16.
