WSU Swimming in Fifth Place

Irvine, Calif. - The Washington State women's swimming team is in fifth place with 256 points after the sprint portion of the 26th annual UC Irvine/ AYRES Country Inn and Suites Invitational.
Sophomore Monika Povilonyte finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.34. The time was a season best for Povilonyte and second best time on the year for WSU. She also captured a second place finish in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 30:38. Povilonyte swam a 2:20.99 in the 200 breaststroke to earn fourth place.
Freshman Bryn Mooney finished third in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.38. In the 100 butterfly Mooney recorded a time of 57.91 to finish second. Her time was the third best in the 100 butterfly for a Cougar swimmer this season.
Sophomore Erin McCleave captured second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 24.27 and 51.98 respectively. McCleave also placed fourth in the 100 and 200 backstroke with a times of 58.61 and 2:08.98 respectively. In the 50 backstroke McCleave finished sixth with a time of 27.92.
Other notable finishes for WSU include; freshman Maegan Wood who finished sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.20. Junior Jane Copland finished 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.07) and 13th in the 50 breaststroke (32.30). Freshman McKenzie Reiter placed 10th in the 50 breaststroke (31.75). Sophomore Kayli Changstrom finished fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.64 and a seventh place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.55 for a season best time. Sophomore Laurie Gregg finished sixth in the 200 backstroke with 2:09.79.
Nevada leads the 12 team field at the UC Irvine/ AYRES Country Inn and Suites Invitational with 512 points followed by UC Irvine, Illinois and Rice.
WSU will continue to compete in the UC Irvine/ AYRES Country Inn and Suites Invitational January 9 at 10 a.m.
