Candice Wiggins Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Freshman guard Candice Wiggins (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 6-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Wiggins helped the eighth-ranked Cardinal to a pair of wins in Arizona last weekend, scoring 31 points in Tempe and 28 points in Tucson. A freshman, Wiggins leads the team in scoring and steals this season. In two games this weekend, she averaged 29.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. Wiggins shot a combined 55.3 percent from the field (21-of-38) and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the foul line as the Cardinal swept the desert schools.
In Stanford's 68-57 victory over No. 24 Arizona State on Jan. 7, Wiggins scored a career-high 31 points and dished out six assists. She led the team in both categories and added a career-high six steals -five of which she converted for breakaway lay-ups.
In the 78-66 win over Arizona on Jan. 9, Wiggins scored a team-high 28 points and went 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The victory over the Wildcats snapped Arizona's NCAA Division I-high 34-game home winning streak.
Stanford (13-2, 5-1 Pac-10) will host Bay Area-rival California on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then host No. 13/15 Boston College in non-conference action on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Wiggins and is the 30th all-time selection for Stanford.
