WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Stanford freshman guard Candice Wiggins has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 6-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Wiggins, a native of San Diego, averaged 29.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in two road games as eighth-ranked Stanford swept No. 24 Arizona State and Arizona. The 17-year-old shot a combined 55.3 percent from the field (21-of-38) and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the foul line.
In Stanford's 68-57 victory over No. 24 Arizona State on Jan. 7, Wiggins scored a career-high 31 points and dished out six assists. She led the team in both categories and added a career-high six steals--five of which she converted for breakaway lay-ups.
In the 78-66 win over Arizona on Jan. 9, Wiggins scored a team-high 28 points and went 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The victory over the Wildcats snapped Arizona's NCAA Division I-high 34-game home winning streak.
