NCAA Recognizes Award Winners At Honors Dinner

Jan. 12, 2005

Stanford, Calif. - The same skills she learned as a student-athlete at Stanford University propelled Sally Ride to be the first woman in space, she said when she accepted the prestigious Theodore Roosevelt Award at the NCAA Honors Dinner program January 9.

The traits she shared with the other future astronauts chosen by NASA and the training they received in preparing for space mirrored the traits and training of a student-athlete.

'(NASA was) looking for teamwork, collaboration and communication skills, skills a lot of astronauts, including me, learned playing sports,' she said.

The Teddy was the last honor presented at the annual event that also recognized the Association's Top VIII, Silver Anniversary and Inspiration Award winners.

Recognized with Today's Top VIII award for their contributions to the classroom, community and collegiate athletics were: Kelly Albin, University of California, Davis; Caesar Garcia, Auburn University; Tara Kirk, Stanford University; Kelly Mazzante, Pennsylvania State University; Kay Mikolajczak, University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; Ogonna Nnamani, Stanford University; Angela Ruggiero, Harvard University and Kelly Wilson, University of Texas, Austin.
