Swimming To Compete Vs. Arizona & Northwestern

THIS WEEK: Washington travels to Tucson this week for a pair of tri-meets vs. Arizona and Northwestern on Jan. 14 (2 p.m.) and 15 (10 a.m.). The Huskies will have their hands full as both Arizona and Northwestern are nationally ranked. Both Arizona teams are ranked No. 4, while Northwestern's men are ranked 15th and Northwestern's women received votes in the last poll. Both of Washington's team received votes in the last poll.
SCOUTING ARIZONA: The UA women are 4-0 (3-0 Pac-10) and are coming off a 143-118 victory over Oregon State. The men are 2-1 (0-1 Pac-10) with wins over Wisconsin and British Columbia and a loss to Southern California.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN: The Northwestern men are 2-2 (1-2 Big Ten) and last competed in the U.S. Open in San Antonio, Texas. The women's team is 4-2 (1-2 Big Ten) and most recently defeated No. 23 Tennessee 184-167.
LAST TIME OUT: The Husky men (6-2) are coming off a 161-101 loss to No. 22 Brigham Young last week. The women (8-1) were idle last week but defeated UC San Diego 157-97 on Jan. 2.
NCAA QUALIFIERS: Junior Sharon Olson and freshman Caitlin Shortt have each posted four NCAA B cut times this season. Olson has provisional qualifying times in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles and 200 IM. Shortt has provisional times in the 200 and 400 IMs and 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Other qualifiers on the women's team are Desiree Johnson (100 and 200 backstrokes) and Jessica Buchanan (100 breaststroke). Freshman Bruno Barbic has set NCAA B times in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. He holds school records in both events.
