Six Assistants Named to Cardinal Football Staff
Jan. 14, 2005
Walt Harris, who was named Stanford's head football coach on December 13, 2004, today announced the hiring of six assistant coaches to his staff, including three who were with the Cardinal in 2004.
Harris, who came to Stanford after serving as the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh for the past eight years, will also serve as the team's quarterbacks coach. His six assistant coaches include two who came with Harris from the University of Pittsburgh, three who were at Stanford in 2004 and one who worked in the National Football League.
'I'm very pleased with the quality of the staff,' said Harris. 'Included in this group are coaches with tremendous knowledge and experience on both the collegiate and professional levels. They know what it takes to be successful, they have a proven record of teaching, expertise and leadership and will be a great fit at Stanford University,' he said.
Harris' appointments include: A.J. Christoff, defensive coordinator/secondary; Tom Freeman, offensive line (centers/guards); Nathaniel Hackett, recruiting coordinator/specialists; Ben McAdoo, offensive line (tackles/tight ends); Wayne Moses, running backs; Tom Quinn, defensive ends/outside linebackers/special teams.
Christoff and Quinn held similar positions at Stanford last season while Hackett has been an Assistant to the offensive and defensive coordinators for the past two years on the Farm.
Christoff is a veteran coach who has coached at 11 universities throughout his career, including four in the Pac-10. He has been a defensive coordinator for 18 years at six different schools. Christoff, who was Stanford's defensive coordinator in 1983, returned to the Farm in 2003 and has been the Cardinal's defensive coordinator and secondary coach the past two seasons.
Quinn, who was hired at Stanford in 2002, is in his fourth season as a member of the Cardinal coaching staff. He coached the defensive ends, outside linebackers and special teams as well as being the team's recruiting coordinator last season. This year, he will coach defensive ends and outside linebackers. Quinn, a 1990 graduate of the University of Arizona, coached linebackers, tight ends and special teams at San Jose State for three years (1999-2001) prior to coming to Stanford.
Hackett has been at Stanford for two years as an assistant to the offensive and defensive coordinators. A 2003 graduate of U.C. Davis, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Aggies, this will mark Hackett's first full-time coaching position. He will coach specialists and be the team's recruiting coordinator.
The two coaches who came with Harris from Pittsburgh are running backs coach Wayne Moses and offensive line coach Tom Freeman. Moses is no stranger to the Farm, however. He was the Cardinal's running backs coach in 2002 and '03 before moving over to Pitt for the 2004 season. Moses has coached running backs in the Pacific-10 Conference for 14 years at five schools, including Stanford, USC, Washington, Cal and UCLA.
Freeman, who was at Pitt with Harris since Harris' appointment as head coach in 1997, has been an offensive line coach on the collegiate level since 1969. He will coach centers and guards at Stanford and be the team's run game coordinator. Freeman, a 1969 graduate of San Diego State, has coached at Hawaii, San Diego State, Arizona State and Purdue prior his eight seasons with Harris at Pitt.
McAdoo will work with Freeman on the offensive line and coach tackles and tight ends. He was an offensive assistant and quality control coach last season with the New Orleans Saints. Prior to that, McAdoo was a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 2003, where he worked with Harris, and the offensive line coach, and later promoted to Interim Head Coach, at Fairfield University in 2002.
Harris still has three positions to fill to complete his staff: defensive line, inside linebackers and wide receivers.
