Three Bruins Selected In 2005 MLS SuperDraft
Jan. 14, 2005
It was a highly-successful draft day for UCLA as three players were selected in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. Sophomore Chad Barrett (Beaverton, OR) was selected as the third overall pick by the Chicago Fire, and seniors Mike Enfield (Ventura, CA) and Aaron Lopez (Santa Barbara, CA) were chosen by local teams and will play in front of hometown crowds at The Home Depot Center as members of the Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively.
Barrett becomes the highest draft pick for UCLA since Steve Shak was the No. 1 pick in 2000. In his short career at UCLA, Barrett totaled 50 points on 16 goals and 18 assists. Last season, he led UCLA in assists with 10 and ranked second on the team in scoring with 22 points. He is a two-time All-Pac-10 performer and was the 2003 Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year. Barrett is a starter for the U.S. Under-20 National Team, which is in qualifying for the World Youth Championships.
Enfield, a first-team All-American midfielder this past season, was chosen 15th overall as the third pick in the second round. He will join former Bruins Kevin Hartman, Cobi Jones, Scot Thompson, Sasha Victorine and Pete Vagenas on the Galaxy squad. In 2004, Enfield led the Pac-10 in scoring with 13 goals and 30 points. He earned first-team honors on the NSCAA All-America, All-Far West and All-Pac-10 teams.
First-year MLS franchise Club Deportivo Chivas USA selected two-time M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist Lopez as the No. 26 overall pick (third in the third round). The defender/defensive midfielder originally from Mexico was a first-team NSCAA all-region selection in 2004 and a three-time All-Pac-10 pick. In 2002, he scored the game-winning goal in the NCAA Championship game with 1:02 remaining to give UCLA a 1-0 victory over Stanford. He was chosen as the NCAA College Cup Offensive MVP. Lopez will join former teammate Matt Taylor on the Chivas squad.
UCLA has produced more MLS players than any other university. Last year, a league-high 18 former Bruins were on opening day rosters, and a total of 38 players have been on MLS teams since the league's formation in 1996.
