Bears Take First-Day Lead at Dallas Morning News Classic

DALLAS - California won five events Friday night to take the first-day lead at the Dallas Morning News Classic held at Perkins Natatorium on the SMU campus.
The Bears accumulated 182 points, 24 points ahead of second-place Florida. SMU is in third place with 145 points, followed by Arizona State (126), Florida State (115) and Texas A&M (111).
Cal began the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of Milorad Cavic, Caleb Rowe, Duje Draganja and Rolandas Gimbutis finished in 3:16.11, almost four seconds ahead of runner-up SMU.
Gimbutis later took the Jerry Heidenreich Memorial 200 free in 1:37.48, beating ASU's Jeff Barrett by exactly two seconds. Other Bear winners included Draganja in the 50 free (20.33) and 100 butterfly (47.88), and Rowe in the 100 breaststroke (56.06).
The six-team meet concludes with nine more events Saturday night.
