Cardinal Continues Action at the Sherwood Cup

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The No.7 ranked Stanford men's tennis team continued singles action and began doubles play at the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks on Saturday. Senior Sam Warburg, the tournament's No. 1 seed, was defeated in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw, while three Stanford doubles tandems posted victories in first round matches.
After claiming first and second round victories in the main singles draw on the tournament's first day, the top seeded Warburg had his run cut short in the quarterfinals on Saturday. UCLA's Philipp Gruendler handed the senior his first defeat of the year, 7-5, 6-3.
The Cardinal had great success in the early going of the doubles tournament, as three of the four duos competing advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals with first round wins. Warburg teamed with junior Jon Wong to dispatch USC's Aaron Badart and Whit Livingston, 8-2. The tandem of freshman Phil Kao and sophomore James Wan defeated Johan Berg and Adam Loucks of USC 8-6, while sophomore Eric McKean and senior Phil Sheng earned an 8-5 win over UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Jason Nguyen. Freshman Lee Chang and sophomore David Ryan fell in first round action to USC's Kaes Van't Hof and Brian Wright, 8-2.
In singles consolation bracket play, Kao and Wan advanced to Sunday's semifinals with wins on Saturday.
The doubles quarterfinals begin at 9:00 am on Sunday, with the semifinals slated for a 2:30 pm start. The semifinals of the consolation singles tournament are scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
