Cardinal Gymnastics: The Smyth Report
Jan. 14, 2005
'It's not the size of the dog in the fightit's the size of the fight in the dog...
I have made a difficult decision to reschedule our meet with CAL this weekend for 2006. We are looking forward to kicking off the 2005 season one week later than we originally planned at the University of Washington.
For those of you wondering here is the inside scoop...
On Monday at practice, Natalie and Glyn both rolled their ankles...luckily they are just minor sprains. Natalie is a little swollen but should recover quickly and Glyn seems to be improving daily. We have a team of 11 student-athletes and with Natalie and Glyn we have 8 who are healthy to contribute. Due to our small numbers I didn't feel good about pushing Natalie and Glyn to be ready to compete this weekend for risk of greater injury or chronic ankle pain throughout the season. My apologies go out to all of our fans planning on attending the meet but the health and well-being of my student-athletes is always my number one priority. I would like to thank coach Cari Dubois for her support and for willing to reschedule with us at such short notice. She is an outstanding coach and wonderful person.
The good news is: We are now officially one week away from our first competition of the season and I am getting very excited about what this year will bring! We are a young group with lots of enthusiasm, and an incredible amount of talent. We will start slow---but I have a lot of faith in this team and am confident they will grow into a very competitive squad in time. We have a great group and I have told them that good things happen to teams who work hard, and believe. As always, we will work towards building throughout the year. Our goal as a program is to get better everyday and get more athletes healthy to contribute by the end of the year. By March we should be ready to do something special.
Our mantra for this week is to be a team that Fights for everything, brings an unbelievable amount of Enthusiasm to each practice as well as on Friday nights and to be a team that stays Together and is there for each other. This is when all of our hard work in the preseason pays off and it starts to get fun!
