Hadzic and Sumantri Both Reach Semis At Pac-10 Indoor Championships
Jan. 14, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. -Washington's women's tennis team opened up its spring season in very impressive fashion against so me of the nation's strongest competition as it hosted the 2005 Pac-10 Indoor Championships at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center today. Leading the Huskies as they figure to do all season were co-captains Dinka Hadzic and Dea Sumantri. The two each marched through to the semifinals in the main singles bracket on day one of the three-day competition.
Hadzic, a junior from Split, Croatia, earned perhaps the biggest win of her career in the first round, upsetting the tournament's top seed, Nicole Leimbach of USC. Leimbach is only a freshman but excelled in the fall to earn a No. 6 national ranking heading into the tournament. Hadzic gave Leimbach a rude welcome to the difficult Pac-10, relying on unrelenting groundstrokes to take long rallies. Hadzic had never beaten a top-ten opponent before, but did not show any nerves when things got tight. She split the first two sets with Leimbach, 7-6, 4-6, before holding on for a 6-4 win in the third.
Arizona State's Kady Pooler was the next test for Hadzic in the quarterfinals later in the day. Hadzic was out of synch early, losing the first set 6-2, but stormed back to take the match with two 6-2 wins of her own in the second and third sets. Stanford's Erin Burdette awaits in Saturday's semifinal.
Burdette, the tournament's fourth seed and 22nd ranked player, reached the semifinals by ending Daria Panova's two-year reign as Pac-10 Indoor Champion. Panova, a senior from Oregon, had captured the title each of the past two seasons but Burdette assured a new champion would emerge with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Senior All-American Dea Sumantri reached the Flight I semifinals for the second year in a row, winning two matches in straight sets. Sumantri, the tourmament's third seed and the 13th ranked player in the country, dispatched Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. She carried her strong play through the quarterfinals as well, taking the final four games of the match against Oregon's Dominika Dieskova for a 6-1, 7-5 victory. Sumantri reached the semis in 2004 before falling to Panova. Up next in the semis is USC's Lindsey Nelson, a powerful freshman who upset second-seeded senior Alice Barnes of Stanford in the quarters.
Other Huskies to find success during the first day included senior Mugette Ahn, who notched two singles wins and a doubles victory with freshman partner Tara Simpson. Competing in Flight II, Ahn earned a pair of straight-set wins to set up a semifinal with the Flight II top seed, Anne Yelsey of Stanford. Ahn and Simpson are the lone UW duo remaining in the first doubles flight after winning their first round match in a tiebreak over a Bruin pair.
Freshman Allison Rainey had a marathon day in her first Pac-10 tournament experience. After surviving her first round Flight II singles match in a third-set tiebreak, Rainey fell just shy of Cal's Monica Wiesener in the quarters, going to another third set before losing 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. She also threw in a doubles victory for good measure with sophomore partner Saskia Nauenberg over a tandem from Oregon to reach tomorrow's Flight II doubles semifinals.
The Pac-10 traditionally dominates collegiate tennis, having won 15 of the 23 team titles since the sport's inception. Six of the top 30 players in the nation were entered in Flight I of singles and the entire field featured 12 of the top 100 women in the current ITA Rankings.
Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with quarterfinal Flight I and II doubles play, followed by consolation matches and then the singles semifinals for each flight. Sunday will feature the finals for each singles and doubles flight.
