Sumantri A Finalist At Pac-10 Indoor Championships
Jan. 15, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - The finals are set after day two at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships hosted by the Huskies at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Senior All-American Dea Sumantri will be representing the Dawgs in front of the home crowd tomorrow, after banging her way into the final of the premier singles flight. The Husky captain will match up against Stanford's Erin Burdette for the title of the prestigious season-opening event.
In today's Flight I singles semifinals, Sumantri faced USC's Lindsey Nelson while Burdette took on UW's second captain, junior Dinka Hadzic. Hadzic had reached the semis in part by upsetting the tournament's top seed in the first round. But Burdette, the fourth seed, was too tough and would lose only one game in defeating Hadzic, 6-0, 6-1.
USC's Nelson is only a freshman but loaded with talent and the ability to hit a winner from any position. But Sumantri played virtually mistake free tennis, mixing up the pace on her shots and applying pressure at the net to keep Nelson's strength at bay. Sumantri, seeded third, held her serve consistently and won the first set by two breaks, 6-2. The second was close throughout but Sumantri earned a service break in the seventh game and made it stand up for a 6-4 win. Sumantri has now gone one step farther than her semifinal appearance last year.
Other Huskies in action on Saturday included senior Mugette Ahn, who was playing for a spot in the Flight II singles final, but was forced to retire due to injury after losing the first set, 6-3, to top-seeded Anne Yelsey of Stanford.
Burdette will have a chance to win two titles on Sunday, as she and partner Alice Barnes advanced to the final of doubles Flight I with a pair of wins on Saturday.
Neither Sumantri or Burdette have lost a set in their three victories leading up to the final.
The Pac-10 traditionally dominates collegiate tennis, having won 15 of the 23 team titles since the sport's inception. Six of the top 30 players in the nation were entered in Flight I of singles and the entire field featured 12 of the top 100 women in the current ITA Rankings.
Play on Sunday gets underway at 9 a.m. with the doubles finals for Flight I and Flight II. Consolation singles finals will follow and then final matches for the singles flights I, II and III at approximately 10:30.
