Phil Kao and James Wan to Face Off in Consolation Finals at the Sherwood Cup

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Freshman Phil Kao and sophomore James Wan will square off in Monday's consolation final after both posted semifinal wins at the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks on Sunday afternoon. The doubles tandem of senior Sam Warburg and junior Jon Wong won a quarterfinal match on Sunday before falling in the tournament's semifinals.
The No. 7 ranked Cardinal placed three teams in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, with the duo of Warburg and Wong defeating UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine and Chris Lam, 8-5, to advance to the semifinals. In other quarterfinal match ups, Kao and Wan fell to Baylor's Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke, 8-4, while sophomore Eric McKean and senior Phil Sheng were defeated by Markus Dickhardt of San Diego State and Greg Shearer of Baylor, 9-8.
Warburg and Wan had their run cut short in the semifinals of the doubles tournament, falling to the mixed-school duo of Dickhardt and Shearer, 8-4.
In singles consolation bracket play, Kao and Wan each posted victories to set up an all-Stanford final for Monday. Kao and San Diego State's Daniel Jung split the first two sets by identical 6-4 scores, with the Cardinal freshman winning the match tiebreaker, 1-0 (5). Wan cruised into the final, defeating USC's Brian Wright in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The consolation final is scheduled for an 11:00 am start on Monday.
The Cardinal plays its first dual match of the season on January 29, taking on California in Berkeley. Stanford will face San Diego in the first home match of the season on February 4.
