James Wan Captures Consolation Singles Title at the Sherwood Cup

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Sophomore James Wan captured the consolation singles title at the Sherwood Cup, defeating Cardinal teammate Phil Kao on Monday in Thousand Oaks. Stanford now heads back to the Bay Area to prepare for its first dual match of the season against California on January 29 in Berkeley.
Wan emerged victorious in the all-Stanford consolation singles final, defeating Kao in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. The teammates squared off for the consolation singles title after each player posted impressive semifinal wins on Sunday.
The match up concluded a successful Sherwood Cup for the No. 7 ranked Stanford squad. Senior Sam Warburg, the tournament's top seed, posted a pair of wins on the tournament's first day and advanced to the quarterfinals, before being knocked out of the main singles draw on Saturday.
The Cardinal also placed three tandems into the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, with the duo of Warburg and junior Jon Wong progressing to the semifinals.
The Cardinal plays its first dual match of the season on January 29, taking on California in Berkeley. Stanford will face San Diego in the first home match of the season on February 4.
