Loescher and Corbett Pick Up Titles at Menlo Invitational

Menlo Park, Calif. - Two Cardinal wrestlers posted 4-0 records at the Menlo Invitational today en route to first place finishes. Scott Loescher took the title at 165 pounds, while Brennan Corbett claimed the crown at 174 pounds. Also placing for the Cardinal were Ray Blake, Mark Egesdal, Matt Tiffin and Larry Ozowara. With 12 entrants in seven weight classes, Stanford finished in fourth place in the eight-team field.
Four Cardinal wrestlers competed in the 165-pound weight class, with Loescher taking first place and Blake snagging third place. Loescher started the day with a major decision before earning a win by injury default to advance to the semifinal match. Loescher shut out Menlo's Junior Liberal to advance to the title bout, where he posted a 5-4 win over Southern Oregon's Jimmy Grochowsky. Blake finished with a 5-1 record today, scoring three major decisions and avenging his one loss of the day in the final bout. Liberal handed Blake a 5-3 loss in the second round of the main bracket, but in the third-place match, Blake took a 6-4 decision over Liberal.
At 174 pounds, Corbett earned a technical fall in his first bout before securing a pair of one-point decisions to advance to the final match. Corbett earned the championship with a 5-3 victory over James Mannenbach of Southern Oregon.
Egesdal took second place in the 184-pound division after scoring a two-straight falls to open the tournament, he pinned Ryan Lynch of SUNY-Oneonta in 1:27 and then pinned Southwest Oregon's Mike Croffutt at 1:23. Egesdal dropped his final bout to finish in second place.
Stanford is headed to the Midwest this weekend, where the Cardinal is slated to face off against Lock Haven and Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Jan. 21. Stanford will then kickoff the Pac-10 season with a dual at Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 23.
