FRIDAY, JANUARY 21Oregon State vs. No. 7 NAIA Embry-Riddle; Fresno, Calif.; 4 p.m.Oregon State at Fresno State; Fresno, Calif.; 7 p.m.SATURDAY, JANUARY 22Oregon State at Cal State-Bakersfield; Bakersfield, Calif.; 5 p.m.

Oregon State's two-week swing across much of the American West continues this weekend in John Steinbeck country, with the Beavers hoping to plant a few of their own Grapes Of Wrath. What it doesn't figure to be is a weekend Of Mice And Men - only the latter.

The Beavers (7-3 overall, 3-0 Pacific-10) will spend Friday in Fresno, wrestling Embry Riddle (12-7), the nation's seventh-ranked NAIA team, at 4 p.m. and Fresno State (2-5-1) at 7 p.m. at Fresno State. On Saturday, OSU will venture just a bit East Of Eden to Bakersfield for a Pacific-10 dual at Cal State-Bakersfield (11-4, 3-1) at 5 p.m.

The Beavers have won three straight dual meets and six of their last seven, and getting back to nearly full strength at the turn of the New Year has had a lot to do with that.

'Progress is being made,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Guys are hanging in there, they're adjusting, they're getting back in the lineup, some of them are getting bonus points - it's a good thing. We've got some good matches coming up this weekend with Cal State-Bakersfield in the conference and Fresno State has a formidable team, and a very good NAIA team in Embry-Riddle. These are going to be some good meets and some good matches.

'We just have to get ready for another trip; we're excited about getting out there and competing. We'll be trying to pick up that pace and put pressure on guys, get that momentum going and looking for bonus points as a team and trying to inspire our teammates.'

It's also getting to that time of the season when Pac-10 duals begin coming with more frequency, which means it's time for the matches that will go a long way toward determining seedings for the Pacific-10 Championships.

'Everybody has their individual goals in terms of getting themselves up in good position for the Pac-10s,' Wells said. 'And as a team we want to win all our meets. Guys have perservered and hung in there, and now it's starting to pay off for them and we're pleased about that.'

Oregon State's two nationally-ranked wrestlers will get tough tests this weekend.

OSU 165-pounder Matt Ellis remained No. 14 in this week's Amateur Wrestling News national rankings and climbed on spot to No. 14 in the InterMat rankings. He'll get a look at Fresno State's Shane Seibert, who is ranked 18th by AWN and 16th by IM, and CSUB's Christian Arellano, who is ranked 15th by AWN and 18th by IM.

Beaver heavyweight Ty Watterson remained 15th on the AWN list and 11th on the IM list. He could face Embry-Riddle's Robert Charlton, who is ranked third in the NAIA, and Fresno State's Clint Walbeck, who is ranked 14th by AN and 13th by IM.

Embry-Riddle wrestled once last week, losing to Cal State-Fullerton 32-11. The Eagles have six wrestlers in the latest NAIA national rankings, as 125-pounder Richard Byrd is ranked seventh, 141-pounder Gordo Villaescusa is ranked sixth, 149-pounder Tyler Moran is ranked first, 174-pounder David Rivera is ranked first, 197-pounder Jamie Hernandez is ranked fifth and heavyweight Charlton is ranked third.

Fresno State dropped a dual meet at home to 10th-ranked Oklahoma last week, losing 26-10. There are four Bulldogs in this week's national rankings, with 157-pounder Jim Medeiros ranked 14th by AWN and 16th by IM, 165-pounder Seibert ranked 18th by AWN and 16th by IM, 197-pounder Marcio Botelho ranked ninth by AWN and seventh by IM, and heavyweight Walbeck ranked 14th by AWN and 13th by IM.

Cal State-Bakersfield earned votes in this week's national coaches poll but did not crack the top 25. CSUB placed fourth at the Virginia Duals last weekend, going 3-2 by beating Buffalo 33-7, losing to Rider 26-18, beating Lock Haven 27-13, beating Ohio 29-15, beating Tennessee-Chattanooga 25-11 and losing to No. 12 Missouri 31-14. There are three Roadrunners in this week's national rankings, with 125-pounder Efren Ceballos rated No. 10 by both AWN and IM, 133-pounder Matt Sanchez ranked No. 4 by AWN and No. 7 by IM, and 165-pounder Arellano ranked No. 15 by AWN and No. 18 by IM.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: This will be the first meeting between Oregon State and Embry-Riddle.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 28-13 against Fresno State in a dual meet series dating back to 1963 and the Beavers are on a 1-meet win streak against the Bulldogs. Last season, OSU won 26-21 in Corvallis; Fresno State's last win was in 2003 by a 24-9 score in Fresno.

Oregon State has an all-time record of 14-10 against Cal State-Bakersfield in a dual meet series dating back to 1977, and the Beavers are on a 4-meet win streak against the Roadrunners. Last season, OSU won 22-14 in Corvallis; CSUB's last win was in 2000 by a 17-15 score in Corvallis.

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEETS: Oregon State swept its 2-dual swing through the Rocky Mountains on Jan. 14, beating Northern Colorado 27-12 and Wyoming 22-12 on their home mats.

At Northern Colorado, OSU 165-pounder Matt Ellis recorded his first pin of the season as the Beavers beat the Bears 27-12. Ellis flattened UNC's John White in 6:02; Ellis, ranked No. 14 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 15 by InterMat, hadn't wrestled this season until the previous weekend due to an injury. The Beavers got a major decision from their other nationally ranked wrestler. Ty Watterson, ranked No. 15 by AWN and No. 11 by IM, took an 8-0 decision over the Bears' Sam Safken. OSU also got major decisions from Bobby Pfennigs at 133 pounds and Tony Hook at 157 pounds. Beaver 174-pounder Jeremy Larson won his sixth straight match, while OSU 125-pounder Eric Stevenson won for the fifth time in his last 6 matches.

At Wyoming, Ellis stayed unbeaten on the season and Watterson won his sixth straight match as the Beavers beat Wyoming 22-12. Ellis took a 6-2 decision over the Cowboys' Gary Dack. Ellis improved to 4-0 this season as he took Dack down in the first and third periods and added an escape and a point for riding time. Watterson earned the Beavers' only team bonus points of the night on the mat, taking an 8-0 major decision over Wyoming's Drew Severn to boost his record to 13-1 with 4 pins this season. During his 6-match win streak, Watterson has shut out his opponents 4 times and recorded pins in the other 2 victories. Larson saw his win streak end at 6 matches when he moved up a weight to 184 pounds and dropped a 3-2 decision to UW's Samuel Wendland. Larson is now 7-2 this season. Wyoming jumped to a 6-0 lead with decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, then Watterson, Stevenson and Pfennigs put together a 3-match run for the Beavers that put OSU up 10-6. Stevenson notched his 10th win of the season and is now 10-6 with 3 pins after beating Bryce Leonhardt 4-3; Pfennigs earned his win with a takedown 15 seconds into overtime against the Cowboys' Tyson Shatto. UW earned wins at 141 and 149 to go in front 12-10 before the Beavers finished the meet with 3 straight wins. Hook's reversal to start the third period earned him a 2-1 win over Dan Clum at 157 pounds, then Ellis took his victory and Neal Beaudry received a forfeit at 174 pounds.

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells: Joe Wells, who is in his 13th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 143-87-1 for a winning percentage of .621.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 22 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE THIRD IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were third in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the 2004-05 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 877-279-24 and a .753 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 49th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 363-71-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .833. This season, OSU is 2-1 at home.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING HOMECOMING: Oregon State will celebrate its annual OSU Wrestling Homecoming later this season at a meet to be announced. In last season's OSU Wrestling Homecoming, Oregon State beat Oregon 23-18 in front of 1,132 fans and legendary former OSU coach Dale Thomas. There were 25 former OSU wrestlers on hand; during their Oregon State careers, they accounted for 35 individual conference championships, 25 All-America finishes and 7 national championships.
