No. 4 Bruins Cruise Over LMU in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team turned in a solid performance in its 2005 season opener Wednesday, posting a 6-1 victory over local rival Loyola Marymount at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA (1-0) set the tone from the very beginning, cruising to victories in all three doubles matches to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. Sophomore Daniela Bercek and freshman Riza Zalameda, ranked fifth nationally, picked up their first-dual match victory together, defeating Carla Arguelles and Patrycia Hubl, 8-4 at the No. 1 position. The Bruins also registered an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot and an 8-1 decision at No. 3 doubles.

UCLA carried the momentum into singles play, taking straight-set victories on five of six courts. Freshman Elizabeth Lumpkin was the first to finish her match, dropping just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Erin Sanchez at the No. 6 spot. Zalameda, ranked ninth nationally in singles, put UCLA ahead 3-0 following her 6-1, 6-2 win over Hubl at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Tracy Lin clinched the match for the Bruins back on court No. 4, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kimi Kaloi. Bercek, ranked 20th in the latest ITA Rankings, was the next player to finish, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Arguelles at the No. 1 spot.

Bruin senior Sarah Gregg posted the final UCLA victory on the day, defeating Diana Vinis, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. LMU picked up its lone victory of the afternoon at court No. 3, where Tamara Tanner registered a 7-6(5), 2-6, 1-0(11-9) win over UCLA's Alex McGoodwin.

UCLA's next match will be on Jan. 27 against UC Irvine at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
