UW Ranked No. 12 In Preseason Coaches' Poll

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team tied for the No. 12 spot in the Sports Weekly/ESPN Preseason Coaches' Poll, released today. The Huskies, tabbed No. 8 by Baseball America and No. 17 by Collegiate Baseball in the two other major preseason rankings, tied with Pac-10 foe Arizona at No. 12.

The Sports Weekly/ESPN ranking, compiled from 40 Division I head coaches, picked Texas as its preseason No. 1 team. The Longhorns received 15 of 40 first-place votes. Defending NCAA champion Cal State Fullerton was chosen second despite receiving 16 first-place votes.

Stanford was the highest-ranked Pac-10 team at No. 6 while Arizona State was No. 9 and the Huskies and Wildcats tied for 12th. Other Pac-10 teams that received votes were USC, UCLA and California.

The Huskies begin the spring practice season tomorrow at the Dempsey Indoor practice facility. The Dawgs will work out there for the first week and a half of the practice season before venturing outside. While new FieldTurf is being installed at Husky Ballpark, the team will work out at Shorewood and Ingraham High Schools before opening the season Feb. 11 at UC Irvine.
