Dave Tipton And Darrell Patterson Named Assistant Football Coaches
Jan. 21, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - First-year Cardinal head coach Walt Harris today announced two more additions to the Stanford football coaching staff with the hiring of Dave Tipton as defensive interior line coach and Darrell Patterson as inside linebackers coach. Harris, named Stanford's head football coach on December 13, 2004, still has one more assistant coaching position to fill (wide receivers).
Tipton, who played football at Stanford from 1967-70 and has been a member of the Cardinal coaching staff since 1989, will return for his 17th season on The Farm. Patterson is a veteran coach who has spent the last two seasons coaching linebackers at SMU.
'I am very pleased to have both Dave and Darrell join our staff,' said Harris. 'Obviously Dave is one of Stanford's all-time great players who is very familiar with our team and the University, and I'm excited to have him remain a Cardinal. Darrell is an excellent coach and teacher, and will be a great fit to the Stanford community.'
Tipton was a member of the famed 'Thunderchickens' who, along with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jim Plunkett, led Stanford to the Pac-8 Championship and a victory in the 1971 Rose Bowl over Ohio State. Tipton returned to Stanford as an outside linebackers coach under Dennis Green in 1989 and has since coached under former Cardinal head coaches Bill Walsh, Tyrone Willingham and Buddy Teevens.
Patterson, a 1984 graduate of TCU, was the linebackers coach at SMU in 2003 and '04. Prior to that, he coached linebackers at Baylor in 2002 and Arkansas State in 2001. He coached safeties and outside linebackers at Kentucky for four years (1997-2000), was the defensive line coach at Temple for two years (1995-96), and was the outside linebackers and special teams coordinator at Akron for two seasons (1992-93). Patterson was a four-year starter at TCU (1979-82) who is currently the school's all-time leading tackler (544). He played in the CFL for seven years.
Harris previously named six coaches to his staff on January 14, including A.J. Christoff (defensive coordinator/secondary), Tom Freeman (offensive line (centers/guards), run game coordinator), Nathaniel Hackett (recruiting coordinator/specialists), Ben McAdoo (offensive line (tackles/tight ends)), Wayne Moses (running backs), and Tom Quinn (defensive ends/outside linebackers/special teams). Christoff and Quinn were both on the Cardinal coaching staff a year ago while Hackett served as an assistant to the coordinators.
