Men's Tennis Handles Portland, 6-1, In First Match Of Season

Jan. 21, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Husky men's tennis team opened up their 2005 season in strong fashion today with a 6-1 win over the Portland Pilots at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. 21st-ranked Washington (1-0) maintained its undefeated series record against their northwest foes, besting the Pilots for the 44th time, having never suffered a defeat.

Each doubles match was a one-sided affair, with two of the three coming out in Washington's favor. Portland took a 1-0 lead in doubles play when Roman Borvanov and Scott Kennel upended UW's Daniel Chu and Peter Scharler, 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Washington rebounded with a pair of wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Alex Vlaski and Christoph Palmanshofer earned an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles while Andy Kuharszky and Mike Ricks also cruised to an 8-2 win.

Seniors Peter Scharler and Alex Vlaski quickly extended the lead to 3-0 with straight-set singles wins. Scharler earned the day's first singles win, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 singles over Colby Jager. Vlaski, UW's top player and a two-time All-American, returned from a fall season spent competing professionally to raise his world ranking and dominated his No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0, over Matthew Loucks.

Freshman Andy Kuharszky rolled to a win in his first career dual match, winning 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth singles slot. Sophomore Chris Floyd also earned a straight-set win over Portland's Scott Kennel at No. 6 singles. Portland earned its lone point in the final match of the night as Roman Borvanov held off sophomore Daniel Chu, 7-5 in the third set.

Washington was without the services of ninth-ranked sophomore Alex Slovic, last year's ITA National Rookie of the Year. Slovic is suffering from cracked ribs and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks of action.

Up next for the Huskies is a dual match tomorrow versus the San Francisco Dons at 2:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
