No. 4 Cal beats Arizona to open Pac-10 season

TUCSON, Ariz. - Fourth-ranked California opened its Pac-10 season with a 136-97 win over fifth-ranked Arizona on Friday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Golden Bears sophomore Daniel Lysaught and freshman teammate Louis Vayo each won two events as Cal improved its dual-meet record to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10 Conference.
The Cal A squad of junior Milorad Cavic, senior Caleb Rowe, senior Duje Draganja and sophomore Jonas Tilly opened the day by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:19.45. Rowe, who normally swims the breaststroke and individual medley events, also made news as a diver. He took fourth place on the 1-meter springboard with 60.61 points.
Lysaught won the 1000-yard freestyle a time of 9:15.05. The native of Queensland, Australia, also won the 500 free (4:30.24). Vayo, from Placentia, Calif., won the 400 IM (3:57.68) and the 200 backstroke (1:49.05).
Draganja placed second in the 100 free with an NCAA B qualifying time of 44.60. The Cal A team of freshman William Copeland, Gimbutis, Tilly and Draganja took second place (3:01.13) in the 400 free relay, while Cal senior diver Nathaniel Dean took two runner-up finishes in the 1-meter (2:57.69) and 3-meter (2:47.73) springboards.
The Bears return to action tomorrow, in a 1 p.m. MT dual meet with host Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
