No. 7 Cal falls at No. 4 Arizona
Jan. 21, 2005
TUCSON, Ariz -- The No. 7 Cal women's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season, a 144-99 defeat at fourth-ranked Arizona. The Golden Bears are now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 competition. Cal posted two first-place finishes and eight second-place marks in the loss.
'It was a pretty good meet for us,' said Cal assistant coach Whitney Hite. 'We were a little short in a couple of races, but I thought we did a very nice job. We're a younger team, and we can still take some positive things away from this meet. They were third last year at NCAAs, and they didn't lose much this year. They're well coached, and they were ready for us.'
Cal senior Lauren Medina won the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:49.09. Junior Helen Silver finished first in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.76, another NCAA B qualifying time. Silver missed the NCAA A qualifying time by .52 seconds.
Senior Lisa Morelli, freshman Emily Silver, sophomore Anne Babicz and junior Ashley Chandler all recorded second-place finishes in the following events: Morelli in the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.80), Silver in the 50 freestyle (23.78) and 100 freestyle (50.94), Babicz in the 200 butterfly (2:03.44) and 200 breaststroke (2:19.02), and Chandler in the 500 freestyle (4:58.72). Cal also took second in the 400 medley relay (3:44.05) and in the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.73).
The Bears compete at No. 17 Arizona State Saturday at 12 noon MT.
