No. 10 Huskies Earn Big Road Win Over No. 25 BYU
Jan. 22, 2005
PROVO, Utah - On the road facing a top-25 opponent in only the second match of the season, Washington's women's tennis team excelled under the pressure, sweeping the singles matches for a 6-1 win over No. 25 BYU today at the BYU Tennis Complex. The tenth-ranked Huskies (2-0) completed a successful season opening weekend with today's victory and yesterday's 7-0 sweep of Utah State.
The women remained undefeated in singles play and again were led by co-captains Dea Sumantri and Dinka Hadzic. At No. 1 singles, the 13th-ranked Sumantri surrendered only one game in trouncing BYU's Lauren Jones, 6-1, 6-0. Hadzic, a junior, won in similarly easy fashion at second singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Anastasia Surkova. Sumantri and Hadzic have continued their strong play from last weekend's Pac-10 Indoor Championships in which they each reached the semifinals of the main singles draw.
Junior Mugette Ahn made her dual match singles debut at No. 3 singles after competing only in doubles yesterday against Utah State. Ahn was taken to a third set by the Cougars' Olga Boulytcheva, but persevered for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win. Fourth and fifth singles also went to three sets but the Huskies came out on top in each case. Sophomore Saskia Nauenberg topped BYU's Sofia Holden, 6-3, in the third set at No. 4. Freshman Allison Rainey's No. 5 singles match went to a super-tiebreak, as the Huskies had clinched the win before they entered their third set. Rainey came out on top ten points to five in the tiebreak for the win. UW's other starting freshman, Tara Simpson, has yet to drop a set in dual play thanks to her 6-2, 6-3 win over Rebecca Pike at No. 6 singles.
BYU earned its lone point of the match in doubles, where they notched wins at second and third doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. Sumantri and Hadzic provided Washington with a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, over the Cougars' top team.
The women return to Seattle for their home opener next Saturday, Jan. 29 against Boise State at 11:00 a.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
