No. 17 California defeats No. 56 Cal Poly, 5-2

BERKELEY - The No. 17 Golden Bears (1-0) came back strong after dropping two of three doubles matches, capturing five singles victories and defeating the Mustangs (1-3), 5-2.

Cal Poly picked up the doubles point, with the No. 36 duo of Samantha Waller and Nicole Shabaz defeating Suzi Babos and Marion Raveljoana, 8-3 on court one. The Mustangs clinched the doubles point with Chelsy Thompson and Noelle Lee defeating Jessica Shu and Stephanie Kusano in a tight match, 8-6.

Cal's Monica Wiesener and Cristina Visico picked up Cal's only win in doubles, defeating Falon Lopez and Carol Erikson, 8-5.

No. 3 Suzi Babos continued her winning ways, beating Samantha Waller on court one in straight sets, 6-3; 6-4. Sophomore Monica Wiesener was victories on court two, winning 6-3; 6-0, against Chelsy Thompson.

Freshman Stephanie Kusano and Marion Ravelojaona picked up wins on courts four and five, defeating Nicole Shabaz, 6-4; 6-1, and Carol Erikson, 6-4; 7-5, respectively.

Junior co-captain Jessica Shu was victorious over Sheila Lewis, 6-1; 6-1, on court six.

The Bears travel to San Diego next weekend, where they will battle San Diego on Jan. 28 and San Diego State on Jan. 29.
