Jan. 21, 2005

Seattle - The 18th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team (4-1) utilized a solid performance on beam to beat the pre-season No. 3 Stanford Cardinal (0-1) 192.825-192.425 in front of 1,819 fans at Bank of America Arena on Friday night. Stanford's Liz Tricase won the all-around (39.050), aided by first-place finishes on vault (9.850) and bars (9.825).

On beam, the Huskies set a team season-high with a 48.600. The Huskies swept the top three spots, led by junior Kelly McDonald's first place mark of 9.850. Sophomore Chelsea Bakken and freshman Julie Medeiros tied for second on the event (9.750).

'The girls did a great job tonight,' said Coach Bob Levesque. 'They were a lot more aggressive on beam tonight and they just sucked it up and did a great job.'

The Huskies were without their top overall performer, Carly Dockendorf, and their most consistent beam performer, Molly Seaman, who both sat out with injuries.

Senior Tacia LaBatte paced the Huskies effort on floor, finishing first with a score of 9.850. Tricase tied teammate Natalie Foley for second with a 9.800.

Washington started out quickly by winning the vault as a team, besting the Cardinal 48.425-48.075. UW sophomore Chelsea Bakken led the Huskies, taking second behind Tricase with a 9.775. LaBatte (9.750) was third followed teammate Nikki Waiss (9.725).

The Huskies were forced to count a fall towards their score in their second event bars and finished just behind Stanford 48.000-47.975. McDonald led the Huskies effort on the bars finishing second with a 9.800. Brittney Brabec was third with a career-high 9.775 and teammate Kim Lewis was fourth with a 9.725.

The Huskies return to action next Friday and will host Arizona, Minnesota and Seattle Pacific at 7 p.m.
