Stevenson Sparks Beavers To Pac-10 Dual Victory
Jan. 22, 2005
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Oregon State 125-pounder Eric Stevenson knocked off 10th-ranked Efren Ceballos, sparking Oregon State to a 29-9 win over Cal State-Bakersfield in Pacific-10 wrestling Saturday evening at the Icardo Center. The Beavers (9-4 overall, 4-0 Pacific-10) won eight of the 10 matches on the night, with 165-pounder Matt Ellis remaining unbeaten this season and heavyweight Ty Watterson winning his eighth straight match.
OSU returns home next weekend for three Pac-10 duals, hosting Stanford on Friday at 2 p.m., Cal State-Fullerton on Friday at 7 p.m., and 16th-ranked Arizona State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Cal State-Bakersfield (12-5, 4-2) was the only Pac-10 team other than ASU to receive votes in this week's national coaches poll but Oregon State earned its eighth win in its last 10 dual meets.
'We wrestled well,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, who felt losing a number of close matches at Fresno State on Friday night could have given the Beavers extra incentive at CSUB. 'We may have wrestled as well as we have all year in terms of match-in and match-out. It's a good thing.'We got real motivated by Eric Stevenson; that's a real big win for him.'
Stevenson, who took an 8-2 decision over Ceballos, won for the eighth time in his last 10 matches, improving to 12-7 this season while Ceballos - ranked 10th nationally by both Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat - is now 27-5. Stevenson took Ceballos down just over a minute into the match and rode him out for the duration of the first period, added an escape and a takedown in the second period, and then started the third period with a takedown to build a 7-0 lead.
Travis Gardner had gotten the Beavers started with a 7-2 decision over Bryan Travers. Watterson, ranked 15th by AWN, 10th by IM and second in the Pac-10, then rolled to a 13-1 major decision over Eric Parker, who is ranked third in the Pac-10. It was the first time since Dec. 11 that one of Watterson won a match that didn't involve a pin or a shutout of his opponent; he is now 15-1 this season.
'Travis started us off with a close win, then Ty went out and did a great job against the next-best heavyweight in the conference,' Wells said.
Ellis, ranked 14th by both AWN and IM, got a challenge from CSUB's Christian Arellano in the night's only matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers before prevailing 7-5 in overtime.
Arellano, ranked 15th by AWN and 18th by IM, scored a takedown with one second remaining in the third period to tie the match, but Ellis came up with the winning takedown with 18 seconds left in the extra period to improve to 6-0 this season. Ellis took a 4-2 lead with a pair of first-period takedowns, then the wrestlers traded escapes to start the second and third periods before Arellano's dramatic tying takedown.
OSU's Tony Hook, ranked third in the Pac-10 at 157 pounds, cruised to a 16-6 major decision over Brian Busby, ranked fourth in the conference. At 141 pounds, where Oregon State's Tim Norman has moved up a weight, Norman took a 5-3 decision over Roberto Vargas, who is ranked second in the conference.
Jeremy Larson picked up the Beavers' lone pin of the night, overcoming an early deficit and flattening Jason Carrasco in 2:41 at 174 pounds to improve to 9-3 this season. OSU's Dan Pitsch finished off the meet with a 12-5 decision over Scott O'Rear at 184 pounds, taking control with two takedowns and a two-point near fall in the opening period.
