Jan. 22, 2005

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked USC men's tennis team began the 2005 season with two wins over No. 71 San Diego State and unranked Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) on Saturday at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Trojans captured both matches by 5-2 scores.

'This is a great way to start our season,' said USC head coach Peter Smith. 'San Diego State is a great team that will surprise a lot of people this year and Cal Poly played very well.'

Against the Aztecs (0-1), the Trojans won the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Sophomore Adam Loucks was the first off the court for USC in singles thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Jung at No. 6. Redshirt junior Brian Wright followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 91 Dontia Haynes and sophomore Jamil Al-Agba clinched the Trojan victory with a 6-4, 6-2 upset win over No. 51 Armando Carrascosa at center court. San Diego grabbed two singles victories at the No. 2 and 5 positions.

The Trojans also won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the first point in the second match of the day against Cal Poly (0-1). Freshman Kaes Van't Hof, playing at No. 3, started things off in singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cal Poly's Travis Crawford. Drew Hoskins and Johan Berg sealed the win with victories at Nos. 2 and 1, respectively. The Mustangs did not walk away empty-handed, winning at courts five and six for the final 5-2 decision.
